The sun goddess, Amaterasu, became upset once, and sealed herself in the Cave of Heaven, locking her light away from the world. The kami couldn't persuade her to return, so Uzume hung a large mirror from the sacred sakaki tree outside the cave, and called for musical instruments.
She overturned a washtub and began to dance, stamping out the rhythm and screaming bawdy comments at the cave. The sun was perplexed by the noise, and called out to see what was happening. Uzume had begun to strip off her clothes, drawing delighted shouts and laughter from the other kami, and they replied, "We have found a better goddess!"
Unable to resist her curiosity, Amaterasu peeked from the cave, causing dawn to break in the hanging mirror. She had never seen her own reflection, and was dazzled by her own radiance. Two gods pulled her from the cave, and barred the entrance with magical spells until she could be persuaded to remain without.
And so light and life came back to the world, drawn by Uzume's audacity and sheer exuberance.
